Q: The unit where I am currently getting dialysis also has the Fresenius machine. Why is the Fresenius2008 K in your center better?

A: About 80% of Dialysis Centers use the Fresenius machines. “K” is the latest and most advanced model in the Fresenius line. Compare to “H” or other older machines it allows to monitor the effectiveness of dialysis and condition of your AV fistula or graft not just before or after but also during the procedure. It also measures and corrects your blood temperature which helps to avoid hemodynamic instability.
That is why patients experience less nausea, headaches, weakness, and other possible side effects of hemodialysis.

Q: Why is having a URR of 65 or more important?

A: A URR of 65 or more is considered that you are getting adequate hemodialysis.Research has shown that patients that do not have a URR of 65 or more are likely to have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, or mental confusion. Having a URR of 65 or more helps prevent these symptoms and helps prevent other health issues resulting from not receiving enough hemodialysis.

Q: I was discharged from the hospital with diagnosis End Stage Renal Disease and I’ve got a referral to the hemodialysis unit, but it’s too far from my home. How can I switch to your center?

A: All you have to do just call us at 718-769-4100. We’ll get in touch with your nephrogist, provide you with transportation and assist you with any social or financial problem. We’ll completely arrange your transfer.

Q: How frequently should I be tested to see if I am receiving "adequate dialysis?"

A: A URR or other measurement of the adequacy of hemodilaysis should be measured on a routine basis. Your doctor or dialysis unit will be able to provide you with information on how often you will be checked to see if you are receiving enough dialysis.

Q: I would like to go to Atlanta to visit my sister. How should I make arrangement for my dialysis over there?

A: It's possible for the patients with End Stage Renal Disease to travel all over the country and even some other countries. If you are the patient of our center you don’t have to make any arrangements on your own. Just tell our social worker or your nurse and they will take care of everything including convenient schedule of the procedures in the best Dialysis Centers, contact medical professionals and transfer your necessary medical information over there.

Q: What affects patient survival?

A: There may be many things that affect how long patients on dialysis live. A facility may be able to control some of these things, but not others.

Factors that a facility may be able to control:

How well it cares for its patients, like changing a patient's treatment when necessary.
How well it makes sure that its patients get all the treatments prescribed by the doctor.
Whether it treats its patient's health conditions early.
How well it teaches its patients care of themselves.

Factors that a facility may not be able to control:

Other health conditions like heart problems, diabetes, or cancer.
Unexpected death of patient. For instance complications from surgery.
A patient not following the prescribed treatment. For instance, a patient refusing to finish a dialysis session, not taking medications as prescribed, or not following their proper diet.
When patients first need dialysis, they may have moderate to severe health issues that may or may not improve with adequate dialysis. For this reason, facilities with more new patients may have a higher than expected mortality rate.

 

Q: My mother is in the hospital now due to renal failure. She doesn't want to go for dialysis in Manhattan but on the other hand she would prefer to remain under the care of her nephrologists. Can she come to your center just for dialysis?

A: Yes, she can be dialyzed in our center and remain under the care of her private nephrologist. She will still be able to utilize our social service, support group, education program and the other services. Furthermore, we could arrange transportation to visit her doctor in Manhattan if she needs so.
